First Page Competition 2018

 

It's that time of year again. We're looking for the most captivating first page (up to 400 words) of a story. Entries can be from a novel published, unpublished, a part written novel, or simply a first page written purely for the competition. Entries will be judged anonymously.

Results

All three winning entries will be published in July 2018 on the Words with JAM

website. All entrants will be notified via email with the results.

 

 

Judge: Jane Davis

 

 

Hailed by The Bookseller as ‘One to Watch’, Jane Davis is the author of eight novels.

 

Jane spent her twenties and the first part of her thirties chasing promotions at work, but when she achieved what she’d set out to do, she discovered that it wasn’t what she wanted after all. It was then that she turned to writing.

 

Her debut, Half-truths & White Lies, won the Daily Mail First Novel Award 2008. Of her subsequent three novels, Compulsion Reads wrote, ‘Davis is a phenomenal writer, whose ability to create well-rounded characters that are easy to relate to feels effortless’. Her 2015 novel, An Unknown Woman, was Writing Magazine’s Self-published Book of the Year 2016 and has been shortlisted for two further awards.

 

Jane lives in Carshalton, Surrey with her Formula 1 obsessed, star-gazing, beer-brewing partner, surrounded by growing piles of paperbacks, CDs and general chaos. When she isn’t writing, you may spot her disappearing up a mountain with a camera in hand. Her favourite description of fiction is ‘made-up truth’.

 

 

To Enter

• Entries can be up to, but not exceeding 400 words.

 

• You can submit more than one entry.  First entry submitted is £6, and £4 per entry thereafter.

 

• Entries must be uploaded as Word Documents. Please DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, put your name ANYWHERE on your Word Document as it will be judged anonymously. 

 

• To enter please pay by Paypal using the options below or post a sterling cheque (made payable to J Smith, School House, Lindal, Ulverston, Cumbria LA12 0NB), then complete the entry form below and upload your entries.

 

• If you have any problems completing the online entry form, please email your Word Document(s) to [email protected] and include the information requested on the entry form in the body of the email.

 

 

A Few Rules

It is vital that you read the competition rules before submitting. There aren't many!

 

• Entries must be the author's original work

 

• Entries can be published OR unpublished.

 

• We will not return or keep entries after the winners have been announced. Please keep your own copy.

 

• Entries must be in English.

 

• You must be 16 years or over.

 

• Online entries will be acknowledged within 48 hours, when we have had chance to give them a reference on our system.

 

• No alterations may be made to an entry once it has been submitted.

 

• Copyright remains with the author. However, Words with JAM retain the right to publish the winning entries (first page up to 400 words) in publicity and on its website.

 

• Entries from regular columnists of Words with JAM, or any person assisting in the judging process, will not be accepted.

 

• Prizes will be paid within 30 days of publication of the winning entries either by cheque, bank transfer, or Paypal.
